3 – 5 Years

When learning is more explicit and visible.

Their developing brains is trying very hard to connect the dots in their always new fascinating world.

The all-time ‘questioning’ is just a reflection of the wonderfully imaginative way your child has at looking at the world, and it is really important not to shut his/her ideas down with a very adult way of looking at things. Instead encourage and assist them to figure his/her own answers.

Preschoolers are experiential, hence the trait of “I want to do it myself”. This makes shared activities with parents potent opportunities for cognitive growth.

The following articles will give detailed insights into various aspects of development and the effective strategies to be used to support the optimal growth and learning.

Preschoolers

PSED

Cardinal

Chapter 6.1

PSED is everywhere and in every interaction, you have with your preschooler. From the earliest signs of simple problem solving, to pattern recognition, to “I can fill my own glass of water”, to “why are you upset mom” are all part of supporting your child’s PSED.

Individuality

Chapter 6.2

Often pondered over the question: “What kind of a person will my child become?” Caught yourself looking for clues via his/her responses and characteristics that will help you formulate an idea about your baby’s personality?

Survival

Chapter 6.3

Around the third year of birth a toddler’s energy towards striving for independence passes and naturally channels towards exploring, inventing and creating. Promoting social development and prosocial skills is a challenge. It demands: commitment, time and thought . . . and patience from the parent’s end.

Security

Chapter 6.4

Emotions help us derive meaning from the world around us! Though preschoolers are more independent than infants and toddlers, they still need a lot of help! Develop a confidence in your child, that you will always be around to help him/her manage difficult emotions, or tasks.

Happenings

Chapter 6.5

Enabling Environment is a unique combination of discovery, exploration, investigation, play, and practical tasks all predominantly child-initiated and child-led. The child needs to be encouraged to follow rules and routines, to be responsible for their own safety and assess risks – all under close supervision!

Nudge

Chapter 6.6

Full of ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘where’, ‘who’ and ‘how’ questions.
Take their questions seriously and give them proper reasoning. You might actually be surprised at their grasping and understanding power! This surge in the confidence and self-esteem motivates them to explore the environment around…

Physical Development

Backstage

Chapter 6.7

“Look at me/watch me/see me” is the most popular line of the preschoolers! Significant physical growth and motor development occur in the preschool years. The body becomes less round as it gets taller, stronger, and his/her muscles become more coordinated.

We Hear You!

Chapter 6.8

Preschooler’s are active and energetic and often prefer to run from one place to another rather than walk. The love to play and move freely assures tremendous improvement in their cognitive and affective development. Play experiences serve as a means by which preschoolers will learn about themselves and their environment.

Communication & Language

All Ears

Chapter 6.9

By developing communication as a life skill, children can establish positive relationships and learn to express themselves from an early age. So dear parents, lead through example, starting today! All you need to do this be mindful of the way you interact not just with your kid, but also with people around him/her.

Imagination

Chapter 6.10

Parents’ uses of decontextualized language are associated with their child’s later vocabulary, narrative skills, and reading comprehension skills. It is important to understand that preschoolers have the vocabulary knowledge and cognitive capacity to handle the challenges of decontextualized language.

Literacy

Words

Chapter 6.11

Before your child begins to write, she needs to develop the ability to speak, listen, watch, understand and scribble. The child needs to develop a sense of connection between letters on a page and spoken sounds. Parents need to infuse fun ways of organically seeping in sounds into their child’s system.

Read On…

Chapter 6.12

Read with your child often, as it develops a solid foundation for literacy. It is best to begin reading right from infancy, but it is never too late. However, just reading books to young children isn’t enough…

Preschoolers

Math

Concepts

Chapter 6.13

Preschoolers love to ask questions and play games that involve the many aspects of math. Dynamic engagements, hands-on games and projects, is their route to informal mathematical learnings and applications, However, early math is not about how to count, recognize the numbers and add or subtract them!

The Play Way

Chapter 6.14

We can make the math that occurs in daily life visible to children through math talk. Each day offers us countless opportunities to help children deepen their understanding of math concepts. How can parents support this?
